"That we are not much sicker and much madder than we are is due exclusively to that most blessed and blessing of all natural graces, sleep."

What is sleep?
Sleep is a word used for when the sensory shuts down and their is no more awareness of the surroundings.

Why sleep?
During sleep, the body and brain recover from the workload placed on it that day and stores new knowledge and organizes long term memmory. Physically, it repairs and revitalizes such things as tissue and nerve cells.

REM/NREM?!?!
REM (rapid eye movement) is when clear dreams occur. The eyes move together and the brain gets active while the rest of the body is paralyzed.
Non REM is when the slow eye movements occur. The brain is not as active, the eyes aren't synchronized in movement and the body is less paralyzed.

circadian rhythm?!?!?

The circadian rhythm is based on the sleep schedule. The body takes note of the approximate time of a person's bedtime and alerts them with drowsiness. A similsr thing happens in the morning as the person wakes up with an urge on the body to wake up. Melatonin accounts for the sleepiness while cortisol is responsible for the renewed energy in the morning.

How much?

Sleep need is the amount of sleep a person needs. It is ,on average, between 8 to 10 hours per night.

Sleep Debt is the amount of sleep a peron lacks and "owes" to his/her body.
